In the Bavarian Forest and the Alps, there are numerous easy routes with moderate inclines and well-marked trails. Particularly recommended are the Großer Arber via the family path or the circular hike around the Lamer Winkel. Plan for about two to three hours of pure walking time and wear sturdy footwear.
For a day trip, comfortable hiking boots, a rain jacket, enough water, and a small backpack with provisions are sufficient. Hiking poles can help on rocky sections but are not essential. In summer, sun protection is important; in spring and fall, warm layers are needed.
Travel by train if possible – many Alpine valleys are well connected to public transport. Choose accommodations with an environmental certificate, avoid single-use plastic, and stay on marked trails to protect the sensitive flora. Regional inns often offer seasonal dishes from the local area.
Yes, in most nature parks, guided hikes with rangers or certified nature guides are regularly offered. These tours usually last half a day or a full day and provide interesting information about animals, plants, and geology. Registration is often possible through local tourist offices.
Late summer and early fall usually offer stable weather and a rich array of colors – especially in the Lüneburg Heath. Spring attracts with blooming meadows and fewer visitors. For hikes in Saxon Switzerland, May to October are ideal, while the Black Forest is also appealing in the mild winter.
